Well, we’ve finally arrived at summertime temps and we still have a month to go before the official start of summer. That doesn’t bode well for our summer utility bills. Here are a few ideas that might help soften the blow a little.
Air Care Systems by Price, Inc. is a heating and cooling specialist, so we’re always thinking about things that relate to our industry in particular, but there are things you can do that don’t require a service call.
One of the most basic things that folks have done for years is to open the windows and let fresh air circulate through the house. Our grandparent’s homes were made with high ceilings and big windows to encourage the heat to rise above our heads so we’d be cooler at lower levels and those big windows allowed a lot of air movement in and out of the house. One thing that helps, especially in multi-level homes, is to open the windows on the upper floor on one side of the house while opening the windows on the lower level on the opposite side. It’s called the stack effect.
Another standby from the good old days is the ceiling fan. They’ve come a long way, baby, and you can get some very high-tech models that look as good as they work.
Remember those deep porches and big shade trees? That was no accident! A shade tree planted in strategic areas around your home can have a significant impact on how hard your AC has to work to cool your home. Trellis’s with a pretty vine can help keep that heat from reaching the brick or rock, which tend to hold heat. Awnings and tinted windows are also a great way to reduce glare and heat inside.
Barbecue anyone? Cooking outside is a great way to reduce indoor heating due to cooking–and it tastes great, too!
Evaporative coolers that pull air across wet pads will also help may the air a little more bearable.
And, last but not least, one of the best things you can do is to have your duct work examined for leaks. Air infiltration or escaping air that you’ve paid good money to cool can cause a dramatic increase in your over-all utility costs over the course of the season. Leaking ducts can cause significant loss of cooling–up to 40%.
Air Care Systems by Price, Inc. is here to help by examining the duct work and sealing up any areas where your cool air is escaping before it even makes it into your home. No one wants to pay to cool the great outdoors! Give us a call at 479-996-9288 and we’ll try to help make your summer a little more bearable.
