Get ready for higher prices on anything made of metal. Due to the sweeping tariffs going into effect on imported steel, you can expect prices to go up anywhere from 10% to 25% on metals in the coming weeks and months. We’re looking at a 25% tariff on imported steel and 10% on aluminum.
The theory behind this is to level the playing field for American industry by removing the ability for foreign steel to undercut American steel by selling a cheaper, inferior grade of steel at a lower price.
According to an article in the NEW YORK TIMES dated March 1, 2018 by Ana Swanson “Mr. Trump’s authority to impose such sweeping tariffs stems from a Commerce Department investigation that concluded last month that imported metal threatened national security by degrading the American industrial base. The administration has said it wants to combat cheap metals flooding into the United States, particularly from China, but a broad set of tariffs would fall most heavily on allies, especially Canada, which supplies steel and aluminum to American companies as well as the military.”
Whether it works or not remains to be seen, but the bottom line is EVERYTHING metal (steel, copper, aluminum) is going up in price, some as soon as this month and others in the coming weeks.
