We’ve all heard of old wives tales that our grandparents swore by, but never existed in fact. Myths, legends, and so on. Someone said someone said, but no one’s quite sure who that “someone” is.
Case in point, “If it’s not broke, don’t fix it.” Well, there is a certain amount of truth to that one, but when it comes to a great many things, if you don’t maintain it–it’s not going to stay fixed. You rotate your tires and change your oil in your vehicle, sharpen lawnmower blades, etc. Over time things begin to wear out, age, deteriorate (oh, my aching joints!) and we have to take care of them if we want to preserve them.
Let’s talk about a few “myths.”
- Closing the door to a seldom-used room will save on your energy bills. The fact is, when you disrupt the airflow the efficiency is decreased in your heat and air system and it works harder to compensate–HIGHER energy bills!
- Change your air filters once a year. WRONG! Change or clean your air filters regularly, at least once a month and more often if you have indoor pets, smokers, or other contaminants. Dirty filters mean dirty air and HVAC units that are struggling to “breathe” through all that mess–HIGHER energy bills!
- If you turn your thermostat higher your house will heat up quicker. NOPE! Not true either. Just like an elevator doesn’t move any faster if you push all the buttons, your thermostat will not heat your home any quicker by turning the setting up extremely high. You’ll find yourself in the tropics and needing to open the windows before it’s over–HIGHER energy bills!
- Bigger is better. NOT ALWAYS! Having properly sized equipment for the square footage of a building is key to having optimal comfort levels and lower energy bills. A “too big” unit will just cycle on and off continually and a “too small” unit will never be able to keep up with demands–HIGHER energy bills!
