The weather's getting warmer with sunny skies and balmy breezes, which means that furnace is getting a rest after it's winter workout. Here are a few simple tips on maintaining it during the off-season.
First--perform a basic inspection of your unit. Look for any notable signs of wear or damage--cracks, dents, loose connections, etc. Check vents for any debris that may have collected in them and clean them out.
Next--change the filter. Even though your unit won't be running for a few months, it's a good idea to get rid of that old, dirty filter and put it to bed all nice and clean and ready to go when you're ready to fire it up next winter. Dust is a fire hazard and you don't want it settling in your system throughout the warm months. It will reduce the efficiency of operation when you're ready to use it.
Last, but not least--clean your system. Make sure any problems you noted during your first visual inspection have been taken care of. Remove debris from any ductwork. Give the outdoor unit a good going over by raking away any grass or leaf accumulation and hosing it down, if necessary.
Bonus--call an HVAC specialist to do a maintenance check at least once a year. This ensures that those items you can't see or don't know how to check aren't missed and any potential danger or trouble is headed off before it has a chance to cause damage which results in a costly repair bill, plus it will extend the life of your unit and help keep manufacturer's warranties intact.
