What Does SEER Mean To You?

If you've been considering installing or replacing an air conditioning system, then you may be familiar with the term SEER; but do you really understand what SEER means to you?

Most of us are familiar with the term MPG (miles per gallon) as it relates to our automobiles.  If you're like me, that's an IMPORTANT number!  The SEER rating on your air conditioner is the equivalent of what the MPG is to your car.  It means how efficiently your unit will perform for you--its Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio.  Any of us starting out on a trip want the best mileage we can get from our vehicles so that our overall cost of travel is lower.  The SEER rating helps you determine what your energy efficiency will be as it relates to your cooling bills.  The better (higher) SEER rating you have, the more efficiently your unit will operate.

It's estimated that at least one-quarter of all American homes have an air conditioner that is 20 years old or older.  These aging systems not only cost you in repair and maintenance bills, but they also skyrocket those summer electric bills.  According to a chart from Texas A & M, a 20-year-old system that's replaced by a new system at the 16 SEER rating will save as much as 35-50% per month on your cooling costs.  With 70% of your summer energy bill being made up of just the energy needed to cool your home, the average savings on your monthly electric bill can be significant.  Even enough to make the payments on a new unit in some cases.

The EPA has raised the minimum SEER rating for new installations to 14 as of July 1.  Air Care Systems by Price, Inc. is happy to answer any questions you may have regarding the new regulations and will help you calculate just what upgrading that old system to a newer model may save you over the course of a summer.

With the high summer temperatures and the humidity levels that go along with them, the River Valley experiences some very high heat indexes.  Don't swelter in the sun through another southern summer, give us a call at (479) 777-2331 and let us see just what a new cooling system may be able to do to make "the dog days of summer" bearable at your house.
