FREON–It's Anything But Free!

Wow--all you can say is just "Wow!"  Twenty years ago who would've thought that freon would be so expensive?  Since the EPA's decision to phase it out by 2020, the price has skyrocketed as production plummets.

Air conditioning units that use the R22 refrigerant are going to cost a small fortune to maintain, if you're even able to get it, should a leak develop.  If yours is a unit that you tend to have to "top off" every summer, your outlook is not a good one.  Air conditioners have a sealed system that should never need to be "topped."  If that's the case, you definitely have a leak somewhere.  A qualified service technician can do a test to try to locate and repair it for you, but please be careful to make sure that the person you choose is a certified technician who knows what he's doing.

Repairing and replacing the unit and the refrigerant can be tricky business.  Some use propane-based refrigerants that can be harmful and dangerous.  There are some options available, but if your unit's over 10 years old, it's probably best to just replace it with an R-410 system.
