The other day I decided to take my lunch outside in the shade of a big tree. I looked down beside me and, you guessed it, an entire line of ants. They were very industrious and marching in a straight line--focused. They may be little but they can sure cause a lot of trouble if they get into your air conditioner! Never ignore ants in or near your outdoor AC unit!
Air Care Systems by Price, Inc. loves to hear from our customers. We've been hearing from a lot of you lately--about ants. These pesky little critters are impossible to keep out, but there are a few things you can do to deter them.
Your outdoor unit needs to be kept free of dirt and debris. Be sure to clean up around it after each time you mow or trim your yard. Keep drain lines open and able to flow freely, and put up a barrier or fence around it if you have dogs in the yard. Dog pee will be devastating over time! Keeping your unit clean and free of leaves, dirt, grass clippings, etc. will help deter any pesky little critters from wanting to make a home there (we hope!) but it never hurts to spray around the area every few weeks, or after a hard rain.
Ants get into the ac unit and can do extensive damage. Remember that straight line I talked about? That straight line is due to the scent trail put down by the ants that scouted out the trail in the first place. Their buddies just follow the scent. That's another thing you'll have to take care of if you find a nest in or near your unit. This can be done with ammonia or commercially made products, but be safe in using them, especially if you have children or pets in the area.
Borax is another product that will kill ants, but it takes some time. Just sprinkle it around the places where you see the ants. They will carry it back to their nest and it will eventually kill them after a few days. There are lots of great tips out there on the internet. Just use common sense and a lot of caution if you decide to give them a try.
When little things (ants) give you a big headache, call us! We'll be happy to come out and help get your unit functioning again and ant free. At least for a while... nothing works forever!
