According to the local weatherman, we've got seriously cold temperatures knocking on our doorsteps.  Regardless of whether your heating unit runs on electricity or gas, you need to make sure you take a few steps to prepare for the cold.  Be sure your pets are able to get out of the weather, either indoors or a cozy doghouse with hay, blankets, or even a heating pad.   Keep those faucets dripping inside.  You may even want to open the cabinet doors under your sinks so more heat can circulate.  Disconnect any outdoor water hoses.  Wrap or cover outdoor faucets to help prevent busted pipes.

Another thing to consider is something a little more sinister.  Carbon Monoxide.  It can build up in your home before you even realize it--and it's deadly.

If you have carbon monoxide and smoke detectors in your home that are battery operated, now is a good time to put a fresh battery in each of them.  A good alkaline battery will probably last a year, but it's good to change them out or check them at least twice a year.  A battery is a very small expense when you consider the protection they provide.  Good air quality can be tough to maintain when your house is all shut up to keep the cold outside and the heat inside.  Be sure that you're doing everything you can to be safe and snug in your home.  Your loved ones are counting on you!
